Five members were killed and hundreds injured on Sunday when a church collapsed in Nnewi, Anambra State.
The church, St. Thomas the Aguiros Catholic Church, located at Ezenifite community, in Nnewi South Local Government Area was under construction.
The church was said to be thrown into pandemonium with children yelling and other members confused when the incident happened.
According to reports, one of the dead, Madam Okoye, was the woman leader of Ezinifite Improvement Union.
Okoye was the stepmother of the main financier of the church building project, Leonard Ike Okoye, who is an Aba-based businessman.
The parish priest, Rev. Fr. Cornelius Ezeoliaku, who was also injured in the collapse is said to be in a hospital in Nnewi.
A witnesses, John Nwosu, said three people died in the church which was said to be at the decking level before it came tumbling down.
A detachment of the military men and police was seen at the scene of the collapse assisting victims.
The Catholic Bishop of Nnewi diocese, Most Reverend Hillary Odili Okeke, could not be reached yesterday to comment on the tragedy.
